The current owner of the Amsterdamsche Fijnhouthandel is now the fourth generation within this family business. Once started on the Bloemgracht in the middle of Amsterdam, the company is currently still located in the Minervahaven. In this redevelopment area, the Fijnhout becomes an odd one out among all the theatres, apartments and headquarters of multinationals. This fact, plus the request for more space, led to the wish to have a completely new building built at a new location in Sloterdijk. In close collaboration with the client, we designed an interplay of wood storage sheds and a main building with sawmill, showroom and office on a plot of more than 7000m2.
A design assignment with a shared aesthetic and logistic slant, in which the municipality also had a lot of say in the process. A design that shows the raw material, excels in simplicity and because of its open character invites you to literally rummage around between the planks, tree trunks and stumps.
